Rumors have begun circulating online suggesting that Marvel Studios may be developing a Scarlet Witch centered project. According to these discussions, it would be a post Multiverse Saga project. While nothing has been officially announced, the speculation has gained traction among industry insiders and fan communities, reigniting discussion about where Wanda Maximoff’s story could go next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The conversation appears to stem from a mix of industry chatter and scooper reports, including mentions from outlets such as Dark Horizons and commentary from Daniel Richtman, also known as DanielRPK. While Richtman’s track record with Marvel projects has been mixed, he has accurately reported on studio plans in the past. Regardless, I’m excited, especially considering we haven’t seen a live action Scarlet Witch in years.
The last time audiences saw Wanda was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After destroying every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse, she brings Mount Wundagore down upon herself. The film ends with a burst of red chaos magic, but notably does not show her body. In franchise storytelling, that omission is rarely accidental. An off screen death often signals narrative flexibility rather than finality.
One comic that offers a possible framework for Wanda’s survival is Darkhold Omega. In that story, Wanda does not simply destroy the Darkhold. She absorbs it into herself, becoming its living containment. The comic was released before Multiverse of Madness, so many readers, myself included, interpreted the red energy seen before the mountain collapses as Wanda absorbing the Darkhold rather than being killed by it.
Another comic frequently cited in speculation is Avengers: The Children’s Crusade, which also happens to be one of my favorite comic events. In that storyline, Wanda is discovered alive but without her memories and is revealed to have been sheltered by Doctor Doom. The story explores whether Doom saved her out of genuine concern or self interest, while Billy and Tommy, now members of the Young Avengers, search for her.
While the MCU could borrow elements from this arc for Doomsday or Secret Wars, it seems unlikely, or at least I hope it is unlikely, that a Wanda solo project would center on revisiting Doom related conflicts, particularly since the project is rumored to take place post Multiverse Saga. Those storylines would more likely be handled prior to her solo project, unless the project is used to more fully explain the circumstances of Wanda’s return.
I have two theories on what the project could focus on. One possibility is inspired by Wanda’s current comic run, where she operates as the Sorcerer Supreme. The other, and the one that aligns most closely with a recent MCU development, involves Mephisto.
Before getting into that theory, it’s worth briefly revisiting Agatha All Along. In the show, we learn that Billy and Tommy are alive again. The explanation given is that Billy’s soul reincarnated into William Kaplan after the Hex collapsed. He did not simply disappear when Westview ended. His soul persisted and found a new body, with the implication that Tommy’s soul exists somewhere as well. That is the explanation provided on screen.
However, the comics suggest a darker possibility. Wanda’s twins were created through her magic, and the West Coast Avengers comic reveals that their souls were unknowingly drawn from fragments of Mephisto’s own essence. When Mephisto realized that parts of his soul were being used, he reclaimed them, causing Billy and Tommy to disappear. That loss destabilizes Wanda and directly contributes to Avengers Disassembled and House of M, including the infamous “no more mutants” moment.
The MCU could intentionally adapt this detail. Rather than Mephisto’s essence being accidentally tied to the twins, the MCU version of the character could be far more deliberate and strategic, especially given how Mephisto has been framed as a deal maker in Ironheart. If I were writing this project, I would have Mephisto intentionally allow Wanda to bind his essence to Billy and Tommy, allowing their souls to persist after the Hex collapsed. Not as an act of generosity, but as a calculated move.
If Mephisto’s essence is what anchors Wanda’s children to life, then he holds the leverage. He can reclaim it whenever he chooses, threatening their existence and forcing Wanda into a position where she has to confront the possibility of making a deal with the devil. The project could explore Wanda trying to protect her children while also saving herself from becoming indebted to a literal devil.
Marvel could also explore Doom and Mephisto working together, or having some kind of deal that allows Mephisto to ensure his realm is not impacted by Doom’s plans in exchange for leverage over Wanda, which Doom would need to reshape reality. That kind of arrangement could help explain why Wanda ends up aligned with Doom and how he could ultimately push her toward a “no more mutants” moment.
Just think about it. When someone is threatening a parent’s children, they will do almost anything to save them. The MCU has already explored this idea with Fantastic Four, where Sue and Reed were unwilling to give up their child even to save the planet. It is easy to imagine Doom or Mephisto exploiting that same instinct in Wanda.
Still, I like this idea much more as an exploration for her solo project, where the focus stays on Wanda, her choices, and the consequences of her power.
