Ashley Tisdale’s viral essay about leaving a toxic mom friend group is officially heading to Netflix. According to Deadline, the streamer is developing Toxic Moms, a new dark comedy inspired by the themes of Tisdale’s widely discussed story.
Published in January, Tisdale’s essay Breaking Up with My Toxic Mom Group detailed her experience leaving an exclusive circle of moms. The story quickly went viral as readers tried to identify the high-profile millennial celebrities she was referring to, turning it into one of the internet’s biggest entertainment conversations.
Rather than adapting the essay directly, Toxic Moms is an original series informed by Tisdale’s experience as a mother of two. The comedy follows a sleep-deprived new mom who is drawn into a clique of cool, wealthy mothers. But when the group reveals its darker side, she begins questioning how far someone would go to find a sense of community.
Tisdale is expected to star and executive produce the series. Search Party writer Sabrina Jalees is attached as writer and executive producer, while Emmy-winning Beef star Ali Wong will also executive produce the project.
The series joins Netflix’s growing lineup of female-led comedies, alongside titles like Nobody Wants This, Running Point, and Survival of the Thickest. While Toxic Moms is still in development, its viral real-life inspiration and experienced creative team make it one of Netflix’s most intriguing upcoming comedy projects.
