The internet has found its latest obsession, and this time it is a man made entirely out of wicker.

Wicker, the upcoming fantasy romance starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, has been getting plenty of attention since its first trailer arrived on July 30. The film takes an already unusual love story and gives it an even stranger twist: its leading man is literally woven from wicker.

Colman stars as the Fisherwoman, who lives on the outskirts of a seaside village where she is repeatedly ridiculed for being single and, according to the film’s official synopsis, smelly. Fed up with her narrow-minded neighbors, she commissions a local Basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage, to make her a husband out of wicker. Alexander Skarsgård plays the resulting Wicker Husband, whose relationship with the Fisherwoman sparks jealousy and outrage throughout their conservative village.

As wild as the premise sounds, Wicker is actually a literary adaptation. The film is based on Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story The Wicker Husband. Before the story reached the screen, it was also adapted into a stage musical by composer and lyricist Darren Clark and book writer Rhys Jennings.

Wills-Jones wrote the original short story, while Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson adapted it for the screen and directed the movie. The filmmaking duo previously co-wrote and co-directed the 2020 sci-fi comedy Save Yourselves!, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Alongside Colman and Skarsgård, Peter Dinklage plays the Basketmaker and Elizabeth Debicki plays the Tailor’s Wife. Richard E. Grant, Marli Siu, Nabhaan Rizwan and Ella Bruccoleri are also part of the cast.

The Wicker Husband’s unusual appearance was created largely through practical effects. Wētā Workshop, whose credits include The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, designed and created the character using a fully fabricated suit and full facial prosthetic makeup worn by Skarsgård. Wētā says most shots in the film contain no CGI, although a small amount of visual effects was used for specific details, including light shining through the weave to emphasize that the character is hollow.

The elaborate suit also made the film’s intimate scenes particularly complicated to shoot. Fischer and Wilson told Entertainment Weekly that those sequences required some of the movie’s most detailed preparation, with shots planned and rehearsed ahead of filming. Intimacy coordinator Ita O’Brien also worked with the actors during the process.

Wicker made its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival on January 24. The film will open in select U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026, before expanding to a wider release on October 30.
