Netflix is getting into another corner of the sports romance world with Hoops, an adaptation in development based on Kennedy Ryan’s interconnected basketball romance series.
The three main novels, Long Shot, Block Shot and Hook Shot, each follow a different couple while sharing characters and the world surrounding professional basketball.
Long Shot follows Iris DuPree and rising basketball star August West, who feel an immediate connection when they meet. There’s one major problem: Iris is with August’s longtime rival, Caleb. The story becomes much heavier than its forbidden-romance setup, exploring intimate partner violence, survival and healing.
Block Shot shifts to sports agents Jared Foster and Banner Morales, whose complicated history stretches back to college. Years later, they’re successful competitors in professional sports management, bringing together friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers and second-chance romance.
Hook Shot follows veteran basketball player Kenan Ross and Lotus DuPree, Iris’s cousin. Kenan is a divorced single father rebuilding his life after betrayal, while Lotus is pursuing her career in fashion and dealing with trauma from her past. Their age-gap romance moves between professional basketball and New York’s fashion world.
The books are interconnected standalones, so each centers a new romance while characters from previous stories continue appearing throughout the series.
Netflix landed Hoops for drama series development after multiple buyers pursued the project. All American alum Adrian Dukes will write and executive produce the adaptation.
Kennedy Ryan will also executive produce alongside Will Packer and Sabrina Wind of Will Packer Media. Chris Paul, CJ Paul and Jacqueline Taylor are executive producing through Ohh Dip!!! Entertainment, with Tracey Baker-Simmons also attached.
