Zendaya is heading back into the world of science fiction, this time teaming up with filmmaker Alex Garland for a new movie at A24.
According to Variety, Zendaya has signed on to star in an untitled science-fiction film that Garland will write and direct. Production is expected to begin in 2027, although the studio has yet to reveal any plot details. An official title and release date have also not been announced.
The project brings together two major names in science fiction. Zendaya is already familiar with the genre through her portrayal of Chani in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise, while Garland has built a reputation for exploring the darker possibilities of science and technology.
Garland made his feature directorial debut with the 2015 psychological sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, which explores artificial intelligence through the relationship between humans and an advanced humanoid robot.
He later directed Annihilation (2018), an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel that follows a research team investigating a mysterious environmental phenomenon. Garland’s filmography also includes Civil War (2024) and Warfare (2025), the latter of which he co-directed with Ray Mendoza.
The upcoming film will mark another collaboration between Zendaya and A24. The actress previously starred in HBO’s Euphoria, which was produced in partnership with A24.
She also starred opposite Robert Pattinson in A24’s 2026 dark comedy The Drama.
For Garland, the project continues his relationship with A24, which is also behind his live-action adaptation of the video game Elden Ring. The film has reportedly completed principal photography and is currently in post-production ahead of its scheduled March 3, 2028 theatrical release.
While it’s too early to know what direction Garland will take with his latest sci-fi story, the collaboration offers an intriguing opportunity to see Zendaya explore the genre outside the blockbuster world of Dune.
With filming planned for 2027, more information about the cast and story could emerge as the project moves forward.
