Nicola Coughlan is heading from Bridgerton into the much darker world of Roald Dahl.
The actress has joined Netflix’s upcoming untitled six-episode series inspired by Dahl’s short stories for adult audiences. Rather than adapting a single story, writer Danny Brocklehurst is weaving several of Dahl’s tales together into one interconnected series.
The story follows a young couple who find themselves marooned in a faded seaside town, where they must face con men, adulterers, murderous mothers and snake charmers as they attempt to escape before their own fate is sealed.
Coughlan is part of an impressive ensemble that also includes Naomi Scott, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, Toby Jones, Carmen Ejogo, Josh Finan, Clarke Peters, Christine Tremarco and Michael Socha.
There are also some familiar Netflix names working behind the scenes. Brocklehurst, known for writing the hit Harlan Coben adaptation Fool Me Once, is adapting the stories. Runyararo Mapfumo, whose credits include Sex Education and KAOS, is among the directors, while The Crown executive producer Suzanne Mackie is also involved.
Netflix has yet to reveal which characters the actors are playing or exactly which Dahl stories will appear. However, What’s on Netflix reports that one of the stories expected to be adapted is Lamb to the Slaughter, with Coughlan expected to play its central character, Mary Maloney.
In Dahl’s original story, Mary is pregnant when she receives devastating news from her husband. What begins as an ordinary evening quickly takes a deadly turn involving a frozen leg of lamb.
Production on the series is now underway, meaning more details about Coughlan’s character and the individual stories being adapted should emerge as Netflix gets closer to its eventual release.
